Weeds! What are they good for?

Absolutely nothing!

We are full-swing into Spring and, although our gardens are looking lush and in full bloom…….so are the weeds! This is the time of year where everything grows quickly. Keeping on top of your pruning, weeding and general gardening is imperative to maintaining a beautiful and healthy garden that you, your friends and family will enjoy. Let’s give you a quick run-down on a few simple, regular tasks that will keep your garden looking lovely:

Weeds – It’s quite often hard for a lot of people to determine what’s a weed and what’s a perfectly healthy little plant. However, when weeds are left to grow rampant, they take over a garden very quickly. It’s important to eliminate them promptly.

Pruning – As we mentioned, this time of year everything grows quickly. Pruning regularly will ensure that the job of trimming your trees and shrubs doesn’t become an impossible task.

Weed ‘N Feed – Most lawn weeds begin their germination and growth in winter, especially bindii, clovers and broad leaf weeds, so winter is the perfect time to commence an eradication program for a weed free lawn through the spring and summer seasons. However, winter has passed and we are already well into Spring. Weeding and feeding now is crucial. It must be done 3-4 days after mowing the lawn.

Let’s face it, many of us are time poor. Dave’s Home Maintenance can provide all of these services for you at an affordable price, allowing you to spend your precious time enjoying your garden surrounds with friends and family. Call today for a ‘no obligation’ quote on 0402 702 395.

Do you trust your Tradie?

A while ago, I attended a property to provide a quotation to re-secure some internal cornice. Approaching the driveway, I noticed some fairly ‘shoddy’ repairs to the gable. Discussing this with the home-owner, she said “I had a handyman come out to fix this”. Not only was I shocked to learn that a handyman had done this, but that he had also refused to return to the ‘scene of the crime’ to repair it properly.

All too often I get phone calls from people, especially from the elderly or people who do not understand English very well, who have had sub-standard repairs done to their property and the trades person who has completed the repairs no longer wants to know about it.

So ask yourself the question……Do you trust your Tradie ? Always make sure you do your research when engaging a trades person. I recommend a check list on the following:

  • Google Reviews – make sure you read the google reviews of the trades person you are considering engaging.
  • Experience – Ask the trades person whether they are experienced in your particular repair requirements and how long have they been in business.
  • Referrals – Ask your friends and family if they have a trades person they have used and would be happy to recommend.
  • Price – Make sure your trades person is up front about their hourly rate. If they are quoting you, make sure this is in writing and they complete all the repairs listed on the quotation.
  • Never pay cash up front – only pay the full amount once the work is completed.

Gutters….the neglected accessory of your house!

Your gutters, one of the most important parts of your roof, are also probably one of the most overlooked areas of home maintenance. It’s Autumn! The season that changes dull trees into spectacular art forms. Then, the leaves fall. Where do they end up? In your gutter, among other places. This is the season where leaves and other garden debris can build up quickly in your gutters, rendering them useless unless they are regularly cleared.

Will your insurance cover the damage if your roof leaks via your gutters into your roof cavity? Probably not! Keeping your gutters clear to allow water flow is your responsibility. It’s part of general home maintenance and is the responsibility of the home owner.

So, don’t get caught out, do yourself (and your home) a favour and get your gutters checked and cleaned. It’s cost effective and, in most cases, can be done quickly and efficiently.
